How it works

The same superabsorbent-polymer principle as Barricade, sold in the volume a structure-protection crew or a large rural property actually uses. You draw concentrate through an eductor or inject it into a pump discharge, and coat structures with gel that holds water against heat for hours.

What the market looks like

This is the professional end of the gel market, where the buyer is a rural fire department, a contractor doing structure protection, or a homeowner with several buildings and a pump. Per-litre cost drops sharply above about 20 L, and 200 L drums are the standard format. Thermo-Gel and Barricade both compete here alongside firefighting distributors' house brands. Performance differences between credible brands are smaller than the differences in how well the operator applies the product.

Pump-fed application

Designed to be injected into a pump discharge or drawn by a proportioner, which is how you cover multiple buildings in the time available.

Up front

Consumables

The drum is the consumable. Shelf life is typically 3–5 years unopened, less once broached.

What else you'll need

A pump and proportioner or eductor, CAD $1,500–$6,000, and hose. Without those this is a drum of expensive syrup.

Over five years

Assume a drum replacement per five-year cycle even if unused, plus pump service.

How it differs from the alternatives

Versus a consumer gel kit

Far cheaper per litre and the only sensible option above about three structures. Requires equipment and a person who has trained with it.

Versus retardant

Same wet-versus-dry distinction as always. Bulk gel does not remove the case for treating fences in spring.

Who this is actually for

Ranches, acreages with outbuildings, remote lodges, and neighbourhood co-operatives who buy one drum and one pump between six houses. If you have one house on a suburban lot, buy the consumer kit.
