How it works

A superabsorbent polymer concentrate that mixes with water into a thick gel and is sprayed onto walls, windows, decks and eaves. The gel is roughly 99% water held in a matrix that resists running off and evaporating. It buys the surface it covers a window of protection — typically a few hours in serious heat — and stops working the moment it dries out. It is the last thing you do before you leave.

What the market looks like

Fire-blocking gel is a small, technically genuine category with three or four credible manufacturers — Barricade, Thermo-Gel, and a couple of firefighting-supply brands — plus a great deal of marketing noise. All the real products are variations on the same polymer chemistry, tested to broadly similar standards, and used by professional structure-protection crews. Consumer pricing is CAD $150–$600 for enough concentrate to treat one house once. The differentiators between brands are dwell time in heat, ease of mixing, and whether you can apply it with a garden hose eductor or need a dedicated pump.

Hose-end application

Cling on vertical surfaces

The whole point. It stays on a wall or a window where water would run off in seconds.

Rewettable

If it starts to dry and you still have water and time, you can wet it again rather than reapplying concentrate.

Non-toxic, water-soluble

Rinses off with a pressure washer afterwards. Safe on painted siding, though it will need cleaning up.

How it differs from the alternatives

Versus Phos-Chek retardant

Gel works wet and is applied at the last minute; retardant works dry and is applied in spring. You want both, for different surfaces at different times.

Versus Thermo-Gel

Broadly equivalent chemistry. Barricade's consumer packaging and hose eductor are easier for a homeowner; Thermo-Gel's larger formats are cheaper per litre and aimed at people with a pump.

The timing trap

Gel applied too early has dried out and is doing nothing by the time the front arrives. Gel applied too late means you were still on a ladder when you should have been driving. This product demands that you have a plan and a trigger point written down.

What it cannot do

It protects the surfaces you covered. It does nothing for an open vent, a gutter full of needles, or a woodpile against the wall.
