About Killflare

Killflare exists because the advice about protecting a home from wildfire is excellent — FireSmart Canada, NFPA Firewise, CAL FIRE and the insurance research labs have done the work — but it stops at "install ember-resistant vents" without telling you which ones, or that a sprinkler kit is only as good as the water behind it. We connect the guidance to the shopping list.

How we choose products

We start from what the fire-science organisations recommend, then look for the products that meet those standards — WUI listings for vents, all-metal construction for sprinklers, NIOSH approval for respirators — and that are actually stocked in Canada and the United States. Where the best product is a commodity (a brass impact sprinkler, a roll of 1/8 in mesh) we say so rather than inventing a brand preference.

We show price bands ($ to $$$$) rather than prices, because prices change daily, differ between Amazon.ca and Amazon.com, and spike during fire season. Check the retailer for today's number.

How we make money

Killflare is reader-supported. Links marked as affiliate links go to Amazon and other retailers; if you buy through them we earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. Links marked as direct links go straight to the manufacturer and earn us nothing.

We don't sell products, hold inventory, or accept payment for placement. No manufacturer sees a page before it's published. If a product stops being a good recommendation, it comes off the site.

A note on safety

Nothing on this site is a reason to stay in a home under evacuation order. Every product here is meant to be set up ahead of time and left to work while you leave early. Follow the instructions of your local fire authority over anything you read here.
