Battery & EV Fire Safety

A fast-growing hazard where the products are ahead of the standards.

Lithium-ion batteries in tools, scooters, e-bikes, energy storage and vehicles fail differently from ordinary fires: thermal runaway generates its own heat and flammable gases and can reignite hours later. Storage cabinets, charging rules and EV fire blankets are sensible tools, but much of the market is ahead of the standards, and some claims are not backed by any recognised test. Treat this category as risk reduction around storage, charging and separation, not as a product that makes the risk go away.

Before you buy

  1. Charge and store packs away from exits and combustibles, and stop using any battery that is swollen, damaged or has been in a crash.
  2. Ask storage-cabinet makers what test the cabinet was built to and for a copy of the report. A metal box is not automatically a fire-rated one.
  3. EV fire blankets are a containment tool for trained responders, not an extinguisher.
  4. Large battery energy storage installations fall under NFPA 855 in the US and electrical and fire code rules in Canada. Involve the authority having jurisdiction early.
