The tools here are ordinary — rakes, pole saws, chippers — but buying them with wildfire in mind changes what you prioritize.

Battery Pole Saw
Limbing conifers to 2 m (6 ft) off the ground removes the ladder fuel that carries a ground fire into the canopy. A battery pole saw makes it a weekend job instead of a contractor call.
McLeod Fire Rake / Hoe
The combination rake-and-hoe wildland crews use to scrape fuel down to mineral soil. Ideal for clearing needle litter, cutting a small control line and smothering spot fires.
Before you buy
- Priority one is Zone 0 (0–1.5 m): replace bark mulch with rock, move firewood and propane away, clear under decks.
- A pole saw for limbing conifers to 2 m from the ground is the highest-leverage tool you can buy.
- Battery tools are fine for maintenance; a small gas chipper pays for itself if you're thinning a treed lot.
- Buy a steel leaf rake and a McLeod (fire rake) — dry needle accumulation is the fuel you'll be fighting all season.
- Non-combustible mulch (crushed rock, pea gravel) is a product too — plan delivery early in the season.
