How it works

A vent built as a labyrinth: incoming air has to turn through a baffled path lined with fine mesh before it reaches the attic. Embers, which travel in a straight line and burn out quickly, cannot make the turns. Flame is stopped by the mesh and the geometry. There is no expanding material and no activation — the shape of the thing is the mechanism.

What the market looks like

Brandguard is one of the two names that come up whenever ember-resistant vents are discussed, alongside Vulcan, and both were built for California's Chapter 7A market. Pricing sits in the same CAD $80–$250 per vent band. The category as a whole is under-bought outside California and dramatically under-marketed — there is no advertising budget behind attic vents, which is why most homeowners in high-risk Canadian postal codes have never encountered the concept.

How it differs from the alternatives

Versus Vulcan: Different mechanism, similar tested outcome, similar price. The baffle design has no material that could theoretically age out; the intumescent design gives a positive seal rather than a filtered path. Neither difference is large enough to override availability and lead time in your area.
Versus mesh alone: Mesh retrofits are cheap and worthwhile. A listed vent also handles direct flame impingement, which mesh over a plain vent does not.
Net free area: Any restrictive vent reduces airflow. Check that your replacement's net free area meets your attic's ventilation requirement, or you are trading a fire problem for a moisture and ice-dam problem.
