Fire-Resistant Propane Tank Cover

How it works

A fire-resistant fabric cover, usually silicone- or aluminium-faced fibreglass, thrown over a propane tank or cylinder to shield it from radiant heat and ember contact. It buys the tank time before the pressure relief valve starts venting, and it keeps burning debris off the valve assembly and regulator.

What the market looks like

A small niche with a handful of manufacturers, mostly the same firms making welding blankets and industrial heat shields, plus a few wildfire-specific brands. Prices run CAD $80–$400 depending on tank size and material. Quality varies more than the price suggests: the fire-relevant spec is the fabric's continuous temperature rating and whether it is genuinely rated for radiant heat shielding or is a repurposed welding blanket sold at a wildfire markup.

Features that actually matter

Radiant heat shielding

Reflective or high-emissivity face that keeps the tank body cooler for longer under radiant load.

Sized to common tanks

20 lb and 40 lb cylinders, 100 lb cylinders, and 250–500 gal horizontal tanks each need a different cover.

Vent-clear design

The good ones leave the pressure relief valve unobstructed. A cover that blocks the PRV is worse than no cover.

Tie-down system

Straps or grommets so it does not blow off in the wind that comes with a fire front.

How it differs from the alternatives

Versus clearing 3 m around the tank

Clearing is free, more effective and required by most propane codes anyway. Do it first. The cover is a supplement to a cleared tank, not a substitute for clearing.

Versus wetting the tank

Water cooling is what fire crews actually do and it works better — but it requires someone present with a hose. The cover works when nobody is home.

The safety caveat that matters

Never fit anything that obstructs the pressure relief valve. A tank that cannot vent is a far worse problem than a tank that gets hot. If the cover's instructions are vague about the PRV, do not buy it.

Check with your supplier

Some propane suppliers have views about aftermarket covers on leased tanks. A two-minute phone call avoids a dispute.
