Simple fixed protection for cabinets and enclosures

Condensed Aerosol Generators (Stat-X, FirePro)

Stat-X · FirePro · Firetrace Canada & United States $$$ · No reliable public price — quoted per enclosure

Unpressurized canisters hold a solid compound that, when triggered, releases a fine potassium-salt aerosol that interrupts the fire's chemical chain reaction. They are used for electrical cabinets, engine and generator enclosures and battery rooms.

Why we like it

  • No piping and no pressure vessels — units mount directly in the space
  • Stat-X units are UL and ULC listed
  • FirePro cites a 15-year generator life with low maintenance

Watch out for

  • Leaves a fine potassium-compound powder residue that needs cleanup — not 'clean' in the NFPA 2001 sense
  • Generators get hot when discharging and need clearance from combustibles and people
  • Visibility drops sharply during discharge
Best for

Electrical cabinets, engine and generator enclosures and battery rooms that are normally unoccupied or have limited occupancy.

How it works

An electrical signal from a detection panel or a thermal trigger ignites the solid compound inside the generator. The reaction releases micron-sized particles and gas that fill the enclosure and chemically quench the flames by interrupting the combustion chain reaction. Because nothing is stored under pressure there are no cylinders or pipes; the generators bolt into the protected space. NFPA 2010 covers these systems for enclosed volumes.

Who needs it

An owner or insurer choice under NFPA 2010 (Fixed Aerosol Fire-Extinguishing Systems), typically for enclosed equipment spaces.

Codes, standards and listings

Canada
ULC listed (Stat-X: EX 15004, 'Fixed Condensed Aerosol Extinguishing System Units'; FirePro shows ULC listing). Design under NFPA 2010.
United States
UL listed (Stat-X: EX 15004; FirePro shows UL listing); Stat-X also UL Class I Div 2. Design under NFPA 2010. FirePro states EPA SNAP lists its agent for normally occupied areas. We could not confirm a UL 2775 listing from either maker's page.

What the market looks like

Sold through distributor networks, not retail. Stat-X (made by Fireaway) reports 329 distributors in 94 countries; FirePro has a global distribution network and Firetrace distributes FirePro. Pricing is quoted per enclosure and we found no reliable public figure.

Features that actually matter

Unpressurized
No cylinders to hydrotest and no pressure to lose over time.
No piping
Each generator mounts in the space it protects, which suits cabinets and engine enclosures.
Chemical flame inhibition
Works by interrupting the chain reaction rather than by cooling or oxygen reduction.
Hazardous-location listings
Stat-X lists UL Class I Div 2, EN 15276 and IECEx/ATEX approvals in addition to UL/ULC.

What it really costs

Up front
No reliable public figure — get quotes.
Consumables
A discharged generator is replaced. No reliable public figure — get quotes.
What else you'll need
Detection and releasing panel if electrically triggered; cleanup of residue after a discharge.
Over five years
Periodic inspection of units and releasing circuits under NFPA 2010. FirePro cites a 15-year generator life.

We found no reliable public price source for aerosol generators in Canada or the US, so no figures are given. Get at least two distributor quotes for your enclosures.

How it differs from the alternatives

Versus clean agent gas
No cylinders, piping or room-integrity work, which makes it practical for small enclosures. The trade-off is a powder residue and reduced visibility.
Versus dry chemical systems
Both leave powder. Aerosol generators are unpressurized and need no piping network.
Occupancy
Designed for normally unoccupied or limited-occupancy spaces. FirePro says EPA SNAP lists its agent for normally occupied areas; check the specific product's listing for your use.
01

Buying it

Effort Moderate

Where: Not typical retail — through Stat-X and FirePro distributor networks (Firetrace distributes FirePro).

Lead time: Depends on distributor and enclosure count

Ask for the listing that covers your specific enclosure type, and how the residue is cleaned up after a discharge.

02

Installing it

Effort Moderate

Time: Hours to days, depending on enclosure count and detection

You'll need: Contractor install

Mounting is simple; the care goes into clearances, because the generators get hot during discharge.

03

Living with it

Effort Easy

Periodic inspection of the generators and releasing circuits under NFPA 2010. No pressure gauges to watch.

If not this, then what

  • FK-5-1-12 clean agentNo residue, but needs cylinders, piping and a sealed room.
  • Pre-engineered dry chemicalCommon for process hazards; also leaves powder.
  • Inert gasResidue-free with no synthetic agent, at a larger footprint.

Caveats

  • Discharge leaves a fine potassium-compound powder residue; this is not a clean agent in the NFPA 2001 sense and cleanup is needed.
  • Generators get hot when discharging; clearance to combustibles and people is required.
  • Visibility drops sharply during discharge.
  • We found no reliable public price figures.
Our verdict

A practical way to protect a cabinet, engine bay or small battery room without cylinders or pipe. Go in knowing the space will be full of powder and smoke-like aerosol after a discharge, and keep it to spaces where that is acceptable.
