How it works

A battery or solar-powered Wi-Fi camera pointed at the approach to your property, giving you a live view from wherever you are. In a wildfire context it does one specific thing well: it lets you see smoke, ember fall or fire behaviour at your house after you have evacuated, which is the difference between knowing and refreshing a news site for three days.

What the market looks like

An enormous, fast-moving consumer market — Ring, Reolink, Arlo, Eufy, Wyze and dozens more — at CAD $80–$400 per camera. The fire-relevant considerations are unusual and narrow the field sharply: it has to run without mains power, it has to reach the internet without your house Wi-Fi if the power goes, and it has to survive heat and smoke. Most of the market fails at least two of those. The ones that pass are solar-powered LTE cameras, which are a small and more expensive subset at CAD $300–$600 plus a data plan.

Features that actually matter

Solar or long battery life
Mains power fails early in these events. A solar panel and a decent battery keeps the camera up when the house does not.
LTE option
The critical one, and the one most buyers miss. A Wi-Fi camera dies with your router. An LTE camera keeps reporting as long as the cell tower stands.
Local plus cloud recording
Cloud footage survives the building. Local-only storage burns with the camera.
Weather and temperature rating
Check the operating range. Many consumer cameras top out around 45–50 °C, which a wall in radiant heat will exceed long before flames arrive.
Subscription terms
Many brands paywall cloud storage and even basic notifications. Read what you are committing to before the hardware discount tempts you.

How it differs from the alternatives

Versus a neighbour with a phone
Cheaper, more reliable and more informative, if you have one who stays. Most people do not, which is why the camera exists.
Versus provincial fire perimeter maps
Free and authoritative at the landscape scale. They will not tell you whether your shed is standing. Different questions.
The honest limitation
This is an information product, not a protection product. It changes nothing about whether the house survives. What it changes is your ability to make decisions — whether to send someone back, what to tell your insurer, and whether to stop refreshing a map at 3 a.m.
Wi-Fi dependence is the usual failure
A camera on house Wi-Fi and house power goes dark in the first hour of a major event, exactly when it becomes useful. If you buy one for this reason, buy the LTE version or accept that it is a general-purpose security camera.

Mount high, angle to cover the approach and the most exposed elevation, and point the solar panel south. Test the view remotely on cell data with your home Wi-Fi turned off — that is the scenario it is for.

Clean the lens and solar panel each spring, verify remote access before fire season, and re-check that the subscription is still active. A lapsed plan is a dead camera you think is alive.
