How it works

A silicone-coated fibreglass pouch that resists flame and radiant heat for a stated period, usually with a water-resistant closure. It protects passports, deeds, insurance policies, birth certificates and a backup drive either in a safe at home or as a grab item. Understand what it is: heat and flame resistance for a limited time, not a safe.

What the market looks like

A crowded, low-cost Amazon category full of near-identical products with impressive-sounding temperature claims and very little third-party verification. Prices run CAD $25–$90. Almost every listing claims something like '2000 °F for 30 minutes', typically from an in-house test at whatever conditions favoured the number. Above this tier sit genuinely rated fire safes, which are UL-classified, cost CAD $200–$900 and weigh 25–90 kg. There is very little in between, and the gap is where most buyers' expectations sit.

Features that actually matter

Silicone-coated fibreglass

The standard construction. Effectively all credible bags use it; the differences are layer count and stitching.

Closure type

Velcro plus a zip is better than either alone. The closure is usually the weak point in any real fire exposure.

Size

Get one that fits legal-size documents flat. Folding a deed into a small pouch is how people end up not using it.

Water resistance

Matters more than people expect — anything that survives a fire in a house has usually also been hosed.

How it differs from the alternatives

Versus a rated fire safe

A UL-classified safe is verified, heavy and stays put. A bag is unverified, light, and leaves with you — which for wildfire is arguably the more useful property, since evacuation is the likely scenario.

Versus cloud backup

Scanning everything to encrypted cloud storage costs nothing, survives total loss of the building, and is what actually protects you. The bag protects originals; the scan protects the information. Do the scan first — it is free and takes an evening.

The claims problem

Treat the temperature and duration figures as marketing unless there is a named test standard behind them. Very few in this category have one.

Where you put it

A grab bag by the door is more useful than a bag in a basement safe. The wildfire failure mode is not that the bag failed, it is that nobody picked it up.
